Responding to Power Differentials in the Workplace

Program Overview

Power differentials or unequal power occurs when one individual holds a role that involves teaching, evaluating, providing oversight, supervising, mentoring, coaching, or making decisions that can reward or penalize another employee. When in positions of authority or leadership, it is crucial to understand the responsibility that comes with the power we hold, ensuring that we do not exploit it.

This 1-day training focuses on understanding power dynamics in leadership, emphasizing how leaders’ actions impact the wellbeing of others. While power differentials are intended to benefit vulnerable individuals, they can easily be misused if not properly managed. Leaders must recognize and own their role power to remain conscious, informed, and effective in their leadership.

Leaders will explore four key narratives that emerge when power is unequally distributed, including compliance or resistance as strategic choices, and how these dynamics shape the work environment. As well as engage in reflexive and reflective practice, so that leaders can recognize when they are triggered and understand what they need in order to respond in ways that are helpful to their staff. This training ensures leaders understand how to responsibly navigate power dynamics and lead with integrity.

Exclusive Leadership Training

For New and Existing Leaders

Program Overview

This exclusive training is designed for organizations that have previously participated in any of our leadership development programs. It’s ideal for new leaders who are onboarding into the organization, as well as for existing leaders seeking a refresher.

While the other training programs typically focus on a critical mass of people being trained in person at your organization, after that, a sustainment is provided for new staff and may be delivered online, virtually. Delivering the learning in this way, in person for the other training programs and online for this exclusive leadership training, will hopefully shift the environment. Organizational culture has been significantly impacted by the effects of the pandemic, making it essential to intentionally rebuild connection and come together more organically.

For a modest cost per employee, this training program ensures new leaders align with your organization's goals, values, and shared purpose. It also allows leaders to step back and address the specific leadership challenges they are facing, support their professional growth, and be formally integrated into their Performance Evaluation (PE) and, where appropriate, a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).
